The distortion you hear is probably a product if "clipping". You can normally tell this if you can back off the volume very little and it clears up. That being the case, better speakers will increase the range, but not eliminate the clipping.

Re: Blown amp?
Well, It was doing the same thing with my old(stock) headunit too and it only does it at high volume and only for the bass. But that's not my main problem anymore. Last night a 5 month old autozone motor mount snapped in half through the metal part and the engine lifted up so much that the alternator was digging into the hood and ripped off a bunch of the insulation and left marks on the bare metal. And as if that wasn't enough AZ only gives a 90 day warranty on their parts and this one breaking caused the rear mount to go bad too so now I have to replace the rear too(I already replaced the front mount again today, making it the 3rd motor molunt since I got the car in march of last year)

Re: Blown amp?
Dang, hate to hear that. I have had issues with some vehicles in the past destroying the mounts. I used stainless steel braided straps to limit the amount of movement.
Clipping occurs at high volume and is most noticable in the low frequencies of full range speakers.

Re: Blown amp?
Hmmm. Now my PS pump is shot too
However I am getting a torque strap that came off of a later year taurus and it's a bolt on mod for my car and should help a lot with shifts and idle.

Re: Blown amp?
Oh, and my bazooka stopped working again. I had it hooked up with low level inputs and auto turn-on and all of a sudden it stopped working again. Same thing as before, no power LED and no sound. So I changed the jumper to remote turn-on and wired it up to the remote turn-on wire and still nothing. Once again I checked for power at the power cables(there was) and then checked for power at the fuse on the amp(power there also). None of the cables are shorting and all the fuses are good and the RCA cable is hooked up properly at both ends and I still got nothing
However I read in my owners manual that my tube has a 2 year warranty? If I post the SN could I check whether it's under warranty?

Re: Blown amp?
Alright, if the tube is under warranty I'll probably pull it out of my car before I roll my taurus off a cliff :P

Good idea. We wouldn't want you to destroy good equipment.

Re: Blown amp?
Well, I got a new PS pump on and I found the intermittent problem with my tube. The fuse in the engine bay next to the battery was NOT blown but was not getting a good connection because the fuse holder was broke. I replaced the fuse holder and fuse and so far I have had no more problems. I was able to get 12 volts when checking with a multimeter but it wasn't getting enough power to run the amp.

Re: Blown amp?
Excellent. What type of fuse holder were you using?
